The Most Common Types Of Boilers

Here we will talk about how a boiler work, and about the most common types of boilers. Very often, boilers are used for heating homes, especially the older styles of homes. They are efficient, reliable, powerful, and easy to use. Natural Gas is also a more economical option in comparison to electricity. Therefore, if you are thinking about installing such equipment in your home, it is important to understand how a gas boiler works. This article was written with the intention to help you better understand how boilers work and what kinds of boilers exist.

Types of Boilers

In order for the boiler to last for a long time without major issues, the homeowner should know the basics. In addition, knowledge about the boiler and its components, choose the model that is right for your house. There are two types of burners: Atmospheric and  Condensing boilers. In atmospheric models, the pipe is connected to the metal pipe and led out to the chimney. Boilers with AFUE efficiency between about 80% and 84% are termed standard efficiency. If the units have 85% to 90% efficiency, some brands call them high-efficiency boilers. Most standard boilers have cast iron heat exchangers. These are the most affordable boilers, and they meet federal minimum efficiency standards. Condensing boilers can be floor-mounted (large capacity) or wall-mounted (small-medium capacity) units

In power-vented types of boilers, vents go through the wall in order to get fresh air from outside,  and another pipe brings all exhaust gases outside. So how power vented boilers different from standard efficiency boilers, the main thing which sets them apart is their efficiency levels of 95% AFUE or higher. The efficiency is achieved with a complex heat exchanger, usually aluminum (90% AFUE) or stainless steel (95% AFUE), that maximizes heat transfer by condensing the moisture that is a byproduct of combustion.

How does the boiler work?

The main component of any boiler is the burner. It has a rectangular design and is equipped with nozzles. Through them, the gas enters the burner and is a heating heat exchanger. So the surface of the radiator warms up evenly over the entire surface.

The electronics and control  on both standard and high-efficiency units should  include:

Module sensors, wiring, circuits: everything that allows the unit to function properly.

Safety automation. These are sensors that protect the device from such malfunctions: as overheating; no flame in the burner. If the system fails, the sensors send a signal to the control board and the unit will stop working.

Principle of operation Cold water enters the system through the pipeline. It is fed to the heat exchanger via a circulation pump. The gas valve opens and fuel flows into the burner through the nozzles. The flame sensor is proving that there is a flame, and the circuit board gives a signal to switch from testing mode to normal operation mode. The boiler operates for heating or providing a hot water supply. During operation, combustion products are removed through the chimney or vents. When the set temperature is reached, the flame goes out. Some models are equipped with an outdoor thermostat, so they immediately turn on the heating when the temperature drops.
